NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Micaela Martinelli led six players in double figures with 19 points as Coast Guard beat Wheaton 89-60 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Martinelli had 15 of her team-high 19 points in the second half as the Bears improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Johanna Moolenaar had a career-high 14 points off the bench, making 5 of 6 from the field, while junior Breanna Wood had her first double-double of the season as she finished with a season-highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Kyra Hartman (11), sophomore Annabella Farabaugh (10) and freshman Emma Puddington (10) also scored in double figures in the win for the Bears.
Sophomore Mikaya Pucci had a game-high 22 points and team-high eight rebounds to lead the Lyons, who drop to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Coast Guard shot 42.3 percent (33-78) and made 9 of 31 from 3-point range while Wheaton was 19-53 from the floor (35.8 percent) and connected on just 1 of 15 from behind the arc.
The Bears led 18-15 after the first quarter and used a 7-0 run in the second quarter to open up a 34-23 lead with 4:29 left in the half. Coast Guard led 40-31 at halftime.
Coast Guard would score seven quick points in just over a minute to start the second half to open up a 47-31 lead. The Bears led 61-47 after three.
The Bears would put the game way with an 11-1 fourth quarter spurt opening up a 78-52 lead with 4:29 left in the game.
Coast Guard is back in action on Monday night as the Bears travel to Trinity for a non-conference game at 7:00.
