Bears Win Key Road Game at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Micaela Martinelli led three Coast Guard players in double figures with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds leading the Bears to a 49-40 win over Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

It was a must win for the Bears, who are now 7-16 overall and 5-9 in the NEWMAC tied with WPI for the seventh and final NEWMAC tournament spot. WPI does hold the tiebreaker with a head-to-head win. Wellesley drops to 8-13 overall and 5-10 in the conference.

Freshman Kyra Hartman added 12 points while classmate Emma Puddington finished with 11 points, a team-high four assists and a team-high tying eight rebounds in the win.

Coast Guard shot 35.2 percent in the win (19 of 54) while connecting on just 5 of 24 from behind the arc. The Blue were 18 of 60 from the floor (30 percent) and were 0 for 13 from 3-point range in the loss.

The Bears used a 12-2 second quarter run including six straight points by Puddington to open up a 26-15 lead with 3:59 left in the first half and Coast Guard led 30-17 at the half.

Coast Guard maintained its double digit lead throughout the third quarter and led 40-28 after three.

The Bears led by as many as 17 at 47-30 with 6:55 left and cruised to the win.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday night when the Bears host Springfield at 7:00.
