Bears Drop Three-Way Photo Finish

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.--(5/25/12)--The Coast Guard Women's Varsity 8 suffered a heartbreaker finishing third in a three-way photo finish, as the three boats were seperated by 19 hundreths of a second, during the repechage at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer.

Coast Guard placed third in its heat in the morning with a time of 7:13.46. Williams won the heat (6:55.89), the best time of both heats while Wellesley was second in the Bears heat with a time of 7:03.92. The top two boats in the heat advanced straight to Saturday's Grand Final, so the Bears had to race in the repechage on Friday afternoon.

In the repechage, the top two boats would advance to the Grand Final. Marietta led for most of the race before both Coast Guard and Trinity, who battled back and forth for second place throughout, made a move in the final 150 meters. Trinity won with a time of 7:02.01 edging Marietta (7:02.10) and Coast Guard (7:02.20).

The Bears will race in the Petite Final on Saturday, bringing to a close a remarkable season as the team earned a berth in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2008.

The varsity eight consists of six seniors; coxswain Julianna Harvin, Sarah Jane Otey, Holly Madden, Tiffany Zehnle, Erin Nolan and Kelli Normoyle along with juniors Jess Ward and Catherine Schmitz and freshman Brynna Cooke.
