The Coast Guard Academy women's crew team, ranked 13th in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll, will open up the spring portion of the schedule at home against #8 Wesleyan on Saturday on the Thames River.
Last season, the Bears Varsity 8 won the Petite Final at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer as six seniors went out with a win in the final race of their careers.
The Bears, who had many injuries during the Fall portion of the schedule, must look to replace those graduated seniors this spring. The Bears return three rowers in the Varsity 8 that competed in the NCAA Championship last year in senior captains Jessica Ward and Catherine Schmitz along with sophomore Brynna Cooke.
Coast Guard is ready to step into the spotlight with an entirely new lineup. The team is small in numbers and young, but determined and learning their competitive strengths very quickly.
"I'm really proud of the strides these guys have made this Spring, they are healthy and mentally ready to step into those big shoes left by the senior class that went to NCAA's last Spring," said head coach Jen Meuse. "We are re-working our stroke, re-tooling our coxswains, and forming our own brand of 'competitive excellence'. It's really been a pleasure seeing what they can do and I'm looking forward to the speed that will come from their determination."
The Bears will begin the season with the following lineups.
