BOSTON, Mass. -- Coast Guar's Varsity Eight placed 21st with a time of 18:48.363 at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
The Bears Varsity 8 Line-Up:
8- Tara Strauss
7- Brynna Cooke
4- Elaine Dana
3- Laura Beck
The Head of the Charles is a great challenge for any crew. It is a tough course for the coxswain to steer, with multiple bridges and sharp curves to maneuver around, as well as many crews to compete with.
For the Coast Guard crew, one of the big challenges faced in their race was recovering from a brief collision with another crew, which caused both boats to come to a complete stop, untangle, and recharge again.
Coast Guard was passing Smith College when both boats came through the south side of the River Street bridge and locked oars. While the two crews were pulling apart, Colby College surged past, gaining speed on Coast Guard. The Bears recovered from the collision with tremendous momentum and fought hard to make up for time lost, gaining a strong lead on the Smith crew. However, the time lost to stopping as well as the energy spent recovering their position on the course was detrimental to their overall course speed, and the Bears finished short of their goal of making it into the top half of the field.
"The result is disappointing, and I feel not a true reflection of the power this crew can generate. However, they raced hard and aggressively, giving every ounce of energy they had and not relinquishing the fight.," said Coast Guard head coach Jodi Hope. "I am proud of how the Bears represented the Coast Guard Academy in Boston, and looking forward to one final opportunity next weekend at the Head of the Fish to cap the season on a high note and compare our current speed against those we will see again in the spring."
