NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard dropped their second game of the season to Salve Regina, 17-7, in nonconference action Wednesday night at Cadet Memorial Field.
With the loss the Bears fall to 0-2 on the season while the Seahawks win their season opener (1-0).
Sophomore Anna McGoldrick had a career high three points with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Carter Sanderson scored two goals and junior Daria McKenna added a goal and an assist. Freshman Abigail Bradford and Erin Mullen each scored their first collegiate goal as well.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Maddie Villareal notched a game high six points with five goals and an assist to lead the Salve Regina. Sophomore Olivia Slysz scored four goals with an assist and senior Kaitlin Gillespie scored two goals and added two assists. Sophomore Lindsey Smith was second on the team with five points dishing out four assists and scoring one goal.
The Seahawks quickly jumped out to a four goal lead in just over five minutes from the opening whistle. Smith and Slysz both had two points over this stretch.
The Bears answered with the next two goals as McKenna scored an unassisted goal followed by Mullen taking a pass from freshman MegMarie Stanchi and scoring the man-up goal with 20:31 to go in the first half.
The two teams swapped goals over the six minutes with Sanderson scoring an unassisted goal for a 6-4 score in favor of the Seahawks with 14:26 on the clock.
Salve Regina however scored three of the final four goals of the half to push their lead back to four going into halftime at 9-5.
The Seahawks took control of the game in the second half holding the Bears to nine shots and two goals and scoring eight for the 17-7 season opening win.
Senior Hannah Delguercio made nine saves on 26 shots on goal allowing 17. She is currently first in the conference with 20 saves on the season.
Freshman Bridget Newbury (1-0) opened the season making eight saves in 15 shots on goal and allowing seven.
Coast Guard is back in action on March 4th, as they travel south to take on Richard Stockton during their spring break trip. Opening draw is 4:00 pm.
