NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton overcame an 8-2 halftime deficit and scored the final five goals of the game to beat the Bears 12-11 in the final regular season game of the season in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
The game was for the fourth seed and right host the NEWMAC tournament quarterfinal and the team's will meet again on Wednesday when the fourth-seeded Lyons host the fifth-seeded Bears, who will be making their first NEWMAC tournament appearance in program history.
Wheaton improves to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in the NEWMAC while the Bears finish the regular season 11-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Senior Daria McKenna scored with 10:35 left to give the Bears an 11-7 lead and hopes of hosting a quarterfinal matchup.
The Lyons would score three goals in the span of 90 seconds to cut the deficit to 11-10 with 8:14 left.
Katie Peters tied the game on a goal with 5:55 left before Lilly Callahan's goal with 2:53 left proved to be the game winner.
Marietta Davis had three first half goals, her third giving the Bears a 6-2 lead with 6:39 left in the opening half before Haley McCue and Haley Howard added goals to give Coast Guard the 8-2 halftime lead.
Davis and McCue led the way with three goals each while Howard had two goals and two assists and McKenna had a goal and two assists for Coast Guard.
Mary Budri (3-4) made 13 saves in goal for the Bears.
Coast Guard, which had not won a NEWMAC game, losing all 24 games, during the first three seasons of the program and having nine total wins entering this season, made great strides and will look to make a run to the NEWMAC semifinals with a win on Wednesday.
