PROVIDENCE, RI-- Sophomore Mel Goins scored four goals in Coast Guard women's lacrosse 15-10 setback at Johnson and Wales on Sunday afternoon in con-conference action. The Bears drop to 1-1 while the Wildcats improve to 2-1.
Goins led the Bears with four goals and two draw controls. Sophomore Etta Davis tallied two goals for the Bears. Carter Sanderson, Erin Mullen, Haley Howard, and Haley McCue rounded out scoring for the Bears with one goal each.
Allison Pazienski and Madeline Bishara both scored four goals a piece to lead the Wildcats. Dani Lydecker and Maria Patane both added two goals each and three more Wildcats contributed with one goal in the victory.
McCue and Mullen opened with the first two goals of the contest for the Bears, but it did not take long for JWU to answer.
The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead. Pazienski scored two of her game-high four goals during the run. Sanderson and Goins added their two goals in the final minutes of the half as they cut the deficit to 5-4.
Davis opened the half with a game-tying goal at 5-5, followed by back and forth action until the Wildcats started to pull away at the 18-minute mark. Maria Patane scored two goals during a 7-1 run that opened a 15-8 advantage with 5:25 remaining in the game. Goins scored the final two goals for Coast Guard as they finished with the 15-10 setback.
Johnson & Wales outshot the Bears, 42-21, including 20-7 in the first half.
Sophomore goalie Mary Budri recorded a career-high 14 saves in the loss and drops to 1-1 on the season. Cassidy O'Hara made six saves for the Wildcats and improves to 2-1 on the season.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, March 5 at 4:30 PM when they travel to Conn. College in non-conference action.
