SPARKS,Md.-- Coast Guard women's lacrosse fell to Randolph-Macon, 16-10 on Saturday afternoon at the US Lacrosse Complex. The Bears drop to 1-3 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-2.
Sophomores Haley McCue and Etta Davis, and freshman Maddie Rizzuto all scored two goals for the Bears. Rizzuto also added and assist and had a team-high, five draw controls. Freshman Kathrine Pittman scored her first collegiate goal and Annie McGoldrick, Haley Howard, and Mel Goins all added a goal of their own for the Bears.
Bella Samper scored four goals and Erin Mattone added a hat trick to lead the Yellow Jackets in their victory. Kaylyn Hewes added two goals and had a game-high, seven draw controls. Lexi Jones also chipped in with two goals and five other players each added goals of their own.
Three goals in quick succession put the Yellow Jackets up 3-0 within the first four minutes of the contest. Hewes started Randolph-Macon out with two free position goals about a minute apart. After her goals, senior Rachel Jones took a look at goal and sent one into the cage off the draw control after Hewes' second goal. McCue put the Bears on the board at the 17:38 mark in the first period, as the Bears trailed 3-1. The Yellow Jackets went on another run of five goals unanswered over a three minute period in the middle of the first half, to extend their lead, 8-1. Coast Guard added two in a row over the next three minutes, from Davis and Rizzuto to cut the Bears deficit, 8-3. Randolph-Macon scored the following to goals but Pittman scored with 10 seconds remaining for the Bears, as they trailed 10-4 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half, extending their lead, 14-4. Davis and Rizzuto struck again with two more back-to-back goals. Randolph-Macon responded with two more of their own but Coast Guard scored the final four goals of the game, as a potential comeback fell short with a 16-10 final.
Coast Guard sophomore goalkeeper Mary Budri made four saves in her 23 minutes of play before classmate, Rebecca Dolan finished the game with six saves and four ground balls. The Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Elicia Wells made four saves in her first half of action and Caraline Cypher finished the game with six saves.
Coast Guard will play again on the road on Tuesday, March 9 at 1:00 PM at Washington College.
