Bears Beat Bridgewater

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Etta Davis scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Bears with four points in a non-conference, 8-6 victory over Bridgewater State on Tuesday evening. The Bears improve to 4-8 overall and Bridgewater drops to 6-4 on the season.

Davis was also a force on the draw circle as she had a game-high, five draw controls. Classmate Mel Goins and senior Carter Sanderson both added a pair of goals. Junior Erin Mullen tallied her fourth goal of the season for the Bears. Senior Leah Llewellyn grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers to lead the Bears defense.

Sophomore Emily Hiller scored two goals and recorded four draw controls with three ground balls to lead Bridgewater. Seniors Elizabeth Ettridge, Lisa Moynihan, freshman Jacqueline DeLorey, and junior Hayley White all added a goal each for Bridgewater.

Ettridge scored first for Bridgewater on a man-up opportunity at 27:01 to give the Bears their first of the game. Coast Guard answered with a three-goal run, extending to the 11 minute mark, with two goals from Sanderson and one from Davis to give the Bears a 3-1 advantage. White scored her goal at 4:22 to bring the Bears within one but Goins scored a free-position goal at 3:24 to give Coast Guard a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.

DeLorey and Hiller scored back-to-back goals for Bridgewater to open the second half with a 4-4 tie. Goins, Mullen, and Davis scored the next three goals on a run for Coast Guard to extend their lead, 7-4. Moynihan scored at 5:12 and Hiller brought Bridgewater within one, 7-6 with 1:15 remaining but Davis put the game away with 22 seconds left to give Coast Guard the 8-6 final.

Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Lusk made three saves in her first-career start and sophomore Mary Budri finished the game with 16 minutes remaining with two saves. Junior Hayley Barner made 15 saves for Bridgewater and drops to 6-4 on the season.

Coast Guard outshot Bridgewater, 28-13 and held a 10-6 advantage on draw controls.

The Bears are back in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday on the road at Babson at 1:00 PM.
