NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Maddie Rizzuto had two goals and one assist leading Coast Guard to a pivotal 9-7 win over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Etta Davis and Haley Howard each added two goal each in the win for the Bears.
Coast Guard improves to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC while Mount Holyoke drops to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Bears now sit in sole possession of fifth place with two conference games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the NEWMAC tournament.
Howard got the Bears on the board with 21:21 left in the first half and Davis added a goal with 18:31 left for a 2-0 lead.
The teams would trade goals three times over the next 14 minutes as the Bears held a 5-3 lead and Abby Baldwin's goal with 1:15 left cut the Lyons deficit to 5-4 at halftime. Coast Guard outshot Mount Holyoke 18-10 in the first half.
Howard scored just 20 seconds into the second half to give the Bears a 6-4 lead before Caroline Flynn's goal at 26:44 made it once again a one goal game.
The Bears would score three of the next four goals to take their largest lead of the game 9-6 on goal by Rizzuto with 4:29 left.
Mary Budri made 12 saves to get the win in goal for the Bears while Mia Wysocki also had 12 saves for Mount Holyoke.
Coast Guard outshot the Lyons 33-27.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday in a NEWMAC game at MIT at 5:00.
