Giorgio Wins N.E. Championship to Lead Bears

MIDDLETOWN, CONN.--(2/26/12)--Freshman Nate Giorgio won the 125 pound weight class and sophomore Lucas Taylor placed second at 165 pounds as four Bears earned All-New England honors and Coast Guard finished seventh at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships.

Host Wesleyan edged Springfield 126 to 125.5 to win the team championships while the Bears finished with 63.5 points.

Giorgio, ranked first at 125 pounds heading into the championship, easily beat defending champion Brandon Gauthier from Rhode Island College 10-1 to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Championship at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on March 9th and 10th.

Wrestlers that place in the top six earn All-New England honors.

Giorgio also beat Gauthier 4-1 in the winners' bracket final to earn a spot in the championship match. He rolled in the early round posting a pair of tech fall wins 16-0 and 15-0 before recording a pin in 3:47

At 165 pounds, sophomore Lucas Taylor earned All-New England honors for the second straight season as he was the runner up this year after finishing fourth at 165 pounds last season. He lost 10-1 in the final to Derrick Longo from Springfield.

Taylor started by recording a pin in just 45 seconds before winning a 14-2 major decision. He lost 8-6 to Longo fall to the losers' bracket where he won 12-5 and 10-1 and won by pin in 5:30 to earn a spot in the championship match.

Junior Colin Schuster, wrestling at 157 pounds, opened the tournament with a pin in 3:44 before falling into the losers' bracket with a 10-4 loss. Schuster then won 8-5 before a 2-0 loss to place fourth earning All-New England honors for the first time in his career.

Freshman Mike Giorgio, wrestling at 149 pounds, placed sixth to earn All-New England honors. He dropped his first match 3-2 before recording a pin in 1:42 followed by an 11-1 major decision. He was pinned in 3:56 before losing 13-3 in the fifth place match.
