Three Bears Place 2nd in Season-Opener
MECHANICBURG, Pa.—A trio of Coast Guard wrestlers placed second at the season-opening Messiah Invitational as the Bears placed fifth of nine teams.
Coast Guard finished with 63.5 points, just two behind Maryland-Baltimore County and six behind Heidelberg while host Messiah won with 128 points.
Sophomores Mike Shermot (165 pounds) and Marc Wagner (184) along with junior Nate Giorgio (133) all placed second for Coast Guard while junior Mark Howard placed fourth at 197 pounds.
Shermot rolled to the final with tech fall wins of 19-4 and 22-7 before a 15-4 major decision victory in the semifinals. He lost to Stephen Aiello of Wheaton of Illinois 7-4 in the championship match.
Wagner began the tournament by registering back-to-back pins in 2:57 and then in 5:39 to advance to the semifinals. He won 4-3 to advance to the championship where he was pinned in 3:19 by Josh Thompson of Messiah.
Giorgio was dominant in rolling to the championship match. He won by tech fall scores of 17-2 and 16-0 before a 6-0 decision in the semifinals. He lost to Ryan O'Boyle of McDaniel 10-5 in the championship match.
Howard lost his first match 4-2 to drop to the losers bracket. He then won 3-1 and 12-7 to earn a spot in the third place match where he was beaten 6-3 by Justin Halaska from Heidelberg.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Roger Williams Invitational.
