BRISTOL, R.I.-Sophomore Marc Wagner and freshman Matthew Vieira both recorded top-five finishes in their respective weight classes to lead the Coast Guard wrestling team to a 10th place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday. The Bears finished with 53.5 points in the 12-team field while Messiah finished first with 153 followed by Johnson & Wales (149) and SUNY-Cortland (146) in second and third, respectively.
Wagner earned a fifth place finish in the 184 pound weight class by going 4-2 on the day. He reached the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket before having to battle his way through the consolation bracket where he won three matches. Vieira made things a little more difficult for himself at 149. He managed his way to the second round of the winner's bracket before being relegated where he won four matches before falling in the third place match.
Other notable finishers for Coast Guard included freshmen Matthew McAllister (131) and Phillip Azzari (197) who both went 2-2 making the quarter-final round of their weight classes before finishing in seventh place in the consolation bracket.
Sophomore Holden Takahashi (157, 2-2) and juniors Steve Kidwell (157, 0-2) and Ben Greene (165, 2-2) all earned 13th place finishes on the day while junior Vaughn Gehman (165, 1-2) and freshman Austin Clark (125, 0-2) both placed 17th in their weight classes. Freshman Daniel Fiorvanti (174, 0-2) finished 25th to round out Coast Guard's competitors.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, November 23rd when they travel to Springfield College for the Doug Parker Invitational.
