SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-Junior Mark Howard and sophomore Dean Gilbert each posted top-five finishes to help the Coast Guard wrestling team score 61 points at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College on Saturday. The 61 points scored by Coast Guard were good enough for an eighth place finish in the 17-team field.
Freshman Phillip Azzari (2-3) and sophomore Tom Porzillo (2-3) both went 2-1 in winner's bracket competition before falling in the semi-finals at 197 and 141 respectively. Both would ultimately earn a sixth place finish at the competition.
Howard (197) went 1-1 in winner's bracket match-ups before battling through the consolation bracket to the tune of a 5-1 record to help him go 6-2 and record a fourth place finish on the day. Gilbert (5-2) went 2-1 and reached the quarterfinal at 184 before being relegated to the consolations bracket and finishing 5-2 on the day, good enough to snag a fifth place result.
Junior Steve Kidwell (3-2 at 157), sophomore Michael Shermot (1-2 at 165), and sophomore Marc Wagner (1-2 at 184) all reached the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes. Kidwell grabbed a seventh place finish while Shermot and Wagner both had to settle in for a ninth-place tie in their divisions.
Freshman Austin Clark (125) went 1-2 to grab a ninth place finish while sophomore Holden Takahashi (157) and senior Ryan Montvydas (197) went 2-2 and 1-2, respectively, to garner 13th-place ties in their weight classes.
Springfield took the title with 142 points, while Roger Williams finished at the runner-up with 127.5 points. Stevens (119), Rhode Island College (117.5), and Johns Hopkins (84.5) rounded out the top five.
Coast Guard returns to action on Wednesday, December 4th when they take on Roger Williams in their first dual match of the season at 7:00 pm.
