YORK, Pa.-Freshman Matthew Vieira recorded a second place finish to lead the Coast Guard wrestling team to a 10th place finish at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College.
In all, Coast Guard had eight wrestlers (out of 13) snag top-ten finishes on the day en route to tallying 35 points in the 13-team event. Johnson won the team title with 119.5 points, narrowly edging Ithaca's 117.5.
Delaware Valley came third with 97 points, followed by SUNY-Brockport (85.5) and York (PA) College (81.5). Johns Hopkins (75.5), TCNJ (73.5), Merchant Marine (58), Williams (52), and Coast Guard rounded out the top ten.
Vieira went 3-1 on the day, staying in the winner's bracket the entire time before ultimately falling to Delaware Valley's Vinny Favra by fall at 2:50.
Coast Guard's next highest finishers were juniors Michael Giorgio (3-2 at 149) and Nolan Salyer (2-2 at 184) who both came seventh on the day.
The Bears had five ninth-place finishers spanning five weight classes. Freshman Earl Roberts (1-2, 125), sophomore Thomas Porzillo (1-2, 141), juniors Steve Kidwell (3-2, 157) and Vaughn Gehman (1-2, 165), and freshman Phillip Azzari (2-2, 197) rounded out the Bears' top-ten finishers.
Freshman Matthew McAllister was the final Bear to record a victory on the day, finishing 1-2 at 133 pounds in a tie for 21st place.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, January 10 when they travel to Lycoming to take part in the two-day Lycoming Duals.
