Bears Drop a Pair on Day One of 2014 Lycoming Whitehill Duals

LYCOMING, Pa.-The Coast Guard wrestling team had three individuals record victories but it wasn't enough as the Bears dropped a pair of head-to-head match-ups at the 2014 Lycoming Bud Whitehill Duals. The defeats drop the Bears to 0-3 on the young season.

Ithaca 31 - Coast Guard 12

Sophomore Thomas Porzillo defeated Dominick Giacolone in the 141-pound weight class with an injury fall at 3:24 and junior Joel Wyman earned a pin against Cris Ramirez at 3:27 in the heavyweight division.

Ithaca would win the other eight contests, including a forfeit at 133 en route to a 31-12 victory over Coast Guard.

Freshman Matthew Vieira (149) and senior Luke Taylor (174) both dropped narrow decisions in their respective bouts. Vieira fell 3-1 to Eamonn Gaffney while Taylor dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision to Carlos Toribio.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point 35 - Coast Guard 9

In the second match of the day, Wyman won his second contest by pin at 3:35 over Luke Hoffmann in the heavyweight division. Vieira, who dropped a close decision earlier in the day, picked up a narrow 8-7 victory in the nightcap.

But those were the only two victories Coast Guard recorded as Wisconsin-Stevens Points won by a 35-9 margin. Once again the Bears suffered a forfeit loss in the 133-pound weight class but on the whole were more competitive in their second match of the bay.

Porzillo, who won earlier in the day, fell by a 3-2 decision to Lance Fabry while junior Benjamin Green (165) fell 7-5 in his bout to make up the near-misses for the Bears.
