NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard hosted a highly successful All-Academy Championships, placing eighth in a field including five Division I opponents as well as rivals Merchant Marine and Norwich.
Navy won the team title, finishing with 108.5 points, followed by The Citadel and Air Force in second and third place with 92.0 and 83.0 points, respectively. Army (71.0) and VMI (17.5) rounded out the top five, in order. Merchant Marine won the Division III title with 16.5 points, edging out both Norwich (6.5) and Coast Guard (2.0).
The Bears' top individual finishers on the day all took home fifth place honors. Those finishes went to freshman Earl Roberts (125), freshman Matthew Vieira (149), junior Ben Greene (165), sophomore Marc Wagner (184), and freshman Phillip Azzari (197).
That so many underclassmen earned starts at the event should bode well for the future of Coast Guard wrestling. In all five freshmen - and six underclassmen in total - participated at arguably the most prestigious meet on the Bears' wrestling schedule.
Coast Guard returns to action on Thursday, February 6th when they travel to take on arch-rival Merchant Marine at 7:00 pm before returning home next Sunday, February 9th to host Bridgewater State and WPI at noon.
