Painten Win in OT Leads Bears to Sweep

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Kevin Painten won 3-1 in overtime at heavyweight as Coast Guard came from behind to beat WPI 17-16 after beating Bridgewater State 40-8 to complete the sweep of the home tri-match, the Bears only home dual meets of the season.

Coast Guard trailed WPI 13-6 before senior Luke Taylor, taking the mat for the final time at home during his outstanding career, recorded a 16-1 first period tech fall to pull the Bears to within 13-11.

After a loss at 184, freshman Phillip Azzari recorded a come-from-behind 4-3 decision at 197 to keep the Bears close making the score 16-14 heading to the heavyweight match where Painten, who trailed 1-0 heading into the third period battled back to give the Bears the win.

Taylor, who has missed most of the season with an injury was dominant on the mat Saturday as he registered a pin in just 31 seconds in his first match before winning first period tech fall 16-1 in his other match both at 174 pounds.

In Coast Guard's first match of the day, the Bears recorded four pins and beat Bridgewater State 40-8.

Freshman Earl Roberts began the match with a thrilling 4-2 overtime win at 125 before junior Nate Giorgio picked up a forfeit win at 133 pounds. Junior Mike Giorgio won by fall at 141 in just 1:53 to push the Coast Guard lead to 15-0.

Freshman Matthew Vieira registered an 11-3 major victory at 149 pounds and classmate Michael Palomba followed with a pin in 4:51 at 157 as the Bears pushed the lead to 25-0.

Taylor recorded a pin in just 31 seconds at 174 pounds before sophomore Marc Wagner registered a pin at 184 pounds in 4:18.

Freshman Phillip Azzari won a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds to pick up the final points for the Bears.

In the Bears win over WPI, Nate Giorgio registered a 5-4 decision at 133, Palomba won 9-5 at 149, Taylor had the 16-1 tech fall at 174, before Azzari and Painten recorded their key decisions to clinch the win.

Coast Guard improves to 6-9 in dual meets on the season with the two wins.

WPI beat Bridgewater State 44-6 in the first match of the day.

Coast Guard is back in action on with a quad meet against Rhode Island College, Bridgewater State and host Trinity on Saturday beginning at noon.
