Sullivan's NCAA Hopes Alive after Day One of Northeast Regional

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Chris Sullivan, ranked 10th nationally at 157 pounds, advanced to the semifinals while the Bears have four other wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional at Springfield College.

The Bears had five wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals, but Sullivan was the only one to remain in the winners bracket and earn a spot in tomorrow's semifinals. He will need to win one more match to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships as the top three in each weight class earn a berth.

A couple of Bears, Mike Palomba and Dan Fiorvanti suffered heartbreaking one point losses in the quarterfinal round.

Palomba, Fiorvanti, Marc Wagner (184) and Phil Azzari (197) are all still alive in the consolation bracket with a chance to earn All-region honors tomorrow.

Sullivan (157) opened by pinning Matt Jiampetti from Bridgewater State in three minutes before earning a forfeit win to advance to the quarterfinals. He pinned Seth Carter from Daniel Webster in 4:26 to earn a spot in tomorrow's semifinals.

Palomba (165), who had a bye in the first round, pinned Wilson Pellot-Segui from Daniel Webster in 1:49 to earn his spot in the quarterfinals.   He dropped an 11-10 decision to Alec Golner from Roger Williams to drop to the consolation bracket.

In the consolation bracket, Palomba stayed alive with a 10-2 major decision over Clay Callahan from Plymouth State.

Fiorvanti (174) had a bye before beating Lucas Muntz from WPI 11-6 to advance to the quarterfinals. Lou Puca from SUNY-Cortland beat him 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

He remained alive with a 3-1 decision over Matt Froio from Plymouth State in the consolation bracket.

Wagner (184) won a 10-2 major decision over Joe Cataldo from SUNY-Cortland and then beat David Rogers of Norwich 7-3 for a spot in the quarterfinals. He lost to Brandon Conrad from Rhode Island College 9-3 in the quarterfinals.

The senior came up with a 16-1 technical fall win over Joseph Caggiano from Trinity in the consolation bracket to advance to the second day.

Azzari (197) had a bye before winning on an injury default to advance to the quarterfinals. He dropped a 4-2 decision to Joe Giaramita from SUNY-Cortland in the quarterfinals, but advance to the second day with an 11-4 decision over Mason Sangillo from Trinity.

Cory Tomasetti (Hwt.) opened the day with a 4-0 decision over Lucian Cascino of Trinity before falling into the consolation bracket where he pinned Oumar Keita from Western New England in 4:04 before losing in his second consolation match.
