GORHAM, Maine - Coast Guard opened their season with a 28-17 win over Southern Maine Wednesday night.
The Bears start off the season 1-0 while the Huskies drop their first match of the year and fall to 2-1.
Coast Guard got off to a strong start as freshman Owen McClave started off his Coast Guard career by pinning sophomore Casey Abshire in 1:28 at 133 pounds to start the meet. Senior Matthew McAllister followed up McClave's victory with 5-3 decision over sophomore Brendan Weir at 141 giving the Bears an early 9-0 lead.
The Huskies earned back six points as senior Dan Del Gallo, ranked fourth nationally at 149, pinned senior Matt Vieira in 1:36 making the score 9-6.
Junior Chris Sullivan, ranked seventh in the nation at 157, won a tight match over senior CJ Luth with a 5-2 decision pushing the score to 12-6.
Freshman AJ Aeberli also debuted with a victory for the Bears at 165 pounds earning a major decision over freshman Zach Thompson 11-2 increasing the Coast Guard advantage to 16-6.
The next two bouts were key towards Bears victory as sophomore Nick Remke slipped past freshman Josh Smith with an 8-7 decision at 174 pounds. Senior Daniel Fiorvanti took the 184 pound match in overtime as he topped freshman Kolby Smith 4-3 making the score 22-6.
Senior Phil Azzari earned Coast Guard's final win of the night in style as he pinned senior Steve Corio in 2:26.
Southern Maine took the final two matches as sophomore Mike Risti pinned freshman Patrick Irwin in 2:13 to take the heavyweight points followed by freshman Peter Del Gallo winning by tech fall over senior Earl Roberts 15-0 at 125 pounds making the final score 28-17 in favor of the Bears.
Coast Guard is back in action this weekend as they travel to Roger Williams for the competitive Roger William Invitational.
