NEW LONDON, Conn - In the latest 2016 - 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III team and individual rankings released by the committee on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 Coast Guard was ranked 23rd.
The Bears are ranked for the first time this season which began with a victory over University of Southern Maine (28-17) and then fifth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational.
The four teams that finished ahead of Coast Guard at the Roger Williams Invitational are all ranked in the top 20 in the nation, RWU (5), Johnson & Wales (6) ,York (18) and Stevens (11). The Bears were also able to pull an upset on the day as well, finishing a spot ahead of the number 13 team in the country, Messiah.
Junior Chris Sullivan also jumped up the rankings as he is now fourth in the nation at 157 and the top ranked wrestler in New England in his weight class.
The NWCA Division III ranking committee consists of Kevin Bratland (US Coast Guard Academy), Mike Howard (Oswego State), Jon Laudenslager (Wilkes University), Corey Luce (New York University), Eric Keller (Wartburg College), Phil Moenkedick (Concordia College - Moorhead) and Joe Norton (North Central College).
The next NWCA Division III Ranking will be released on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.
