Bears Make it Three Straight Against Mariners

NEW LONDON, Conn. - For the third straight year No. 14 Coast Guard topped archrival Merchant Marine by a score of 31-10 earning another point for the Bears in the battle for the Superintendent's Trophy.

With the win Coast Guard wraps up their third winning season in a row with a record of 11-5 while the Mariners drop to 5-10 overall. The Bears also now lead 8.5-3.5 in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy.

The dual started at 149 pounds as senior Matt Vieira, ranked fourth in New England, jumped out to a four point lead in the first round against junior Matt Henkle on his way to a 11-1 major decision.

Chris Sullivan, ranked fifth in the nation and second in New England at 157, fell behind in the first round to sophomore Erik Beshada 4-1, but used a second round near fall to climb out of the early hole for an 11-6 decision.

Sophomore Nick Remke, ranked second in New England, squeezed out the next win for the Bears at 165 pounds breaking a 1-1 tie against freshman Joshua Glantzman with a take down in the closing seconds for a 10-0 lead for Coast Guard through three matches.

Senior Mike Palomba earned the Bears first pin of the night at 174 pounds taking down sophomore Joseph Fiore with 48 seconds left in the final round for a 16-0 advantage.

Merchant Marine got on the scoreboard at 184 pounds as senior Patrick Rooney scored a 15-5 major decision over senior Daniel Fiorvanti making the score 16-4. 

Sophomore Blake Bunce inched the Mariners closer to Coast Guard earning a take down in the final round to break the deadlock and take a 3-1 decision over senior Phil Azzari cutting the Bears advantage to single digits at 16-7.

Merchant Marine moved within six points after sophomore Victor Raigoza squeezed out a 3-1 decision over freshman Patrick Irwin

The Bears however pushed the lead back to double digits as senior Earl Roberts won by forfeit at 125 for a 22-10 score. 

In the tightest match of the night freshman Owen McClave, ranked second in New England, scored a 4-2 sudden victory over sophomore Tyler Craig scoring a take down with 28 seconds left in the fourth giving the Bears a 25-10 lead.

Senior Matt McAllister wrapped up Coast Guard's third victory in a row over Merchant Marine in resounding fashion with a second round pin over sophomore Chad Puglio giving the Bears 31-10 victory.

Coast Guard is back in action on February 25, when they compete at the NCAA Division III Northeast Championship in Providence, Rhode Island.
