Bears Take Top Spot at Ted Reese Invitational

GORHAM, Maine – Coast Guard wrestling earned their first team victory of the season, finishing in first place at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern.

The Bears scored 166 points to take the top spot followed by host University of Southern Maine with 155 points and junior Christian Gosch was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Sophomore Owen McClave was the first champion of the day as he used victories over Raffaele Masi of Castleton (14-5 MD), Adam Correia of Plymouth State (Fall 1:27), Sean Wieck of Roger Williams (10-1 MD), and Chris Caban of Johnson & Wales (7-2) to make the finals. McClave then finished off his victory at 133 pounds by earning his third major decision of the day with a 14-4 victory over Nick Camacho of Castleton.

Sophomore Matt McGowan dominated his was to the finals at 141 using two tech. falls and two falls to set up a match against Austin Shorey of Southern Maine. McGowan then dispatched of Shorey with a 5-3 decision to add another first place to the Bears tally.

At 157 pounds, it was an all Coast Guard final as senior Chris Sullivan met Gosch in the championship bout. Gosch used four points in the second period to pull away from Sullivan and take his second championship in as many weeks giving the Bears a 1-2 finish at 157 pounds.

Sophomore AJ Aeberli was the next champion for the Bears taking the 174 pound title starting with a tech. fall in 5:50 against Jeff Driscoll of the Apprentice School. Aeberli then used victories over Trent Goodman of Castleton and Jacob Berry of STCC to reach the finals against Justin Stacy of host Southern Maine. Aberli used a take down in the third period to secure his 9-7 victory and give the Bears another valuable championship.

Freshman Jonathan Wagner made the finals at 184 pounds using a major decision, two pins and a decision to reach the first place bout. Wagner however could not overcome a takedown in the third period by Dylan Da Silva of Plymouth State falling 7-5 and settling for second place.

Other top finishers for the Bears were freshman Parker Brunkala (125 pounds, fourth place), freshman Alex Frometa (165 pounds, fourth place), freshman Jeremy Berson (184 pounds, fourth place) sophomore Patrick Irwin (285 pounds, fourth place), junior Nick Jabs (165 pounds, fifth place) and freshman JD Fitzpatrick (141 pounds, 6th place),

Coast Guard is back in action on Monday, December 18th when they travel to Lexington, Virginia for the Washington & Lee Duals.
