NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy wrestling team jumps into the national rankings at No. 25 to start the New Year as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has announced its fourth poll of the 2017-18 season.
This is the first time this season that the Bears have been nationally ranked after going 2-1 at the Washington & Lee Duals over the holiday break, including a 17-15 victory over previously ranked No. 24 Olivet and a narrow one point loss to currently No. 24 ranked Ohio Northern. 19-18. Last year Coast Guard climbed as high as No. 14 in the country with five wrestlers earning All-Region honors.
Junior Nick Remke, senior Chris Sullivan and sophomore AJ Aeberli have led the way this season for the Bears. Remke sits at six at 165 with a record of 14-5 and four pins on the year. He took first place at both the Roger Williams and the Doug Parker Invitational.
Senior Chris Sullivan is currently ranked seventh at 157 with a record of 14-2 with four pins. He was first at the Roger Williams Invitational, second at the Ted Reese Invite and third at the Doug Parker Invitational.
Sophomore AJ Aeberli is 10th at 174 after starting the year with a record of 15-3 and two pins. He earned a first place finish at the Ted Reese Invitational and added a third place finish at both the Roger Williams and Doug Parker Invitational.
The Bears are back in action on January 10th, when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on No. 19 WPI in a midweek dual. First match is 7:00 pm.
