Bears Fall to Engineers in Battle of Nationally Ranked Teams

WORCESTER, Mass. – In the battle of ranked teams, No. 16 WPI held off No. 20 Coast Guard 20-12 snapping a five-match winning streak for the Bears Wednesday night on the WPI campus.

With the loss the Bears fall to 2-2 on the season while the Engineers improve to 9-1 overall.

In the opening match at 125, junior Miguel Aquino used a take down in the second period and an escape in the third to go up 3-1 on freshman Parker Brunkala and held on for the opening victory giving WPI the early 3-0 lead.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Owen McClave was able to hold off senior Stephen Jendritz with a take down in the second earning the 4-3 win and tying the match up at three.

Freshman JD FitzPatrick came back from down three at 141, with four straight points to top junior Andrew Ellis and give Coast Guard their first lead of the night at 6-3.

WPI took the lead back at 149 as senior Jack Nigro earned the 15-5 major decision over freshman Patrick Moynihan making the score 7-6.

The Engineers added to their lead at 157 as sophomore Tyler Marsh led wire-to-wire take the 8-0 major decision over Christian Gosch and a five point advantage at 11-6.

Junior Nick Remke, ranked seventh in the country, came back from down 3-2 deficit in the second to take the bout 9-5 and move within two at 11-9.

In a close battle at 174, sophomore AJ Aeberli, ranked number nine in the country, used two take downs in the third to post the 5-2 win over freshman Mike Ilic and give the lead back to Coast Guard at 12-11.

Freshman Jonathan Wagner gave junior Dan Wensley everything he could handle at 184, but could not complete the win as Wensley used a take down in the second sudden victory round for the 5-3 decision giving the Engineers the lead once again at 14-12.

WPI pushed their lead to 17-12 at 197 as junior Michael Curtis to the 7-4 over sophomore Kayne Roberts.

The Engineers finished off their first victory over the Bears since 2013 with a 3-2 decision over sophomore Patrick Irwin to complete the 20-12 victory.

Coast Guard is back in action this weekend when they travel to Providence, Rhode Island for a quad match against Southern Maine, Norwich and No. 4 Johnson & Wales.
