NEW LONDON, Conn. – Five Coast Guard wrestlers earned postseason honors from the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) while 11 were named to the NEWA's All-Academic team.
Junior All-American Nick Remke, who placed fifth at 165 pounds at the NCAA Division III Championship, was named a first team selection. He was 33-13 this season with eight pins.
Sophomore All-American Owen McClave (133) and classmate AJ Aeberli (174) were named second team selections. McClave placed seventh at the NCAA Championships and had a record of 29-8 with six pins on the season while Aeberli, the Northeast Regional runner-up and NCAA qualifier finished with a record of 30-10 with four pins.
Senior Chris Sullivan (157) and freshman Jonathan Wagner (197) were honorable mention selections by the NEWA. Sullivan placed fourth at the Northeast Regional was 23-11 this season with seven pins while Wagner, who placed third at the regional and was an NCAA qualifier, was 18-9 overall with three pins and 8-3 at 197 pounds this season.
Wagner and Matt McGowan (141), who was 18-7 with four pins, were both named to the All-Rookie team.
The Bears also placed 11 cadet-athletes on the NEWA All-Academic team. Freshman JD FitzPatrick (141), freshman Patrick Moynihan (149), Sullivan (157), sophomore Mason Pagan (157), junior Christian Gosch (157), Remke (165), junior Nick Jabs (165), sophomore Jeremy Berson (184), Wagner (197), sophomore George McBurney (197) and sophomore Patrick Irwin (Hwt.) all earned a spot on the All-Academic team.
To earn a spot on the All-Academic team, a wrestler must be a major contributor to the team and have over a 3.2 GPA.
