Bears Defeat WPI in Dual Meet

New London, Conn. -- Coast Guard Wrestling defeated WPI, 29-12 in a dual match of nationally ranked wrestlers on Wednesday night. The Bears, ranked 24th in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 is now 2-1 in dual meets while No. 20 WPI slips to 6-5 overall.

Coast Guard won the first three bouts en route to a 13-0 advantage.  Parker Brunkala (Mentor, OH) opened up the night by claiming an 11-3 major decision for the hosts at 125 pounds, followed by Kenji Beato (San Diego, CA) win by a 9-3 decision at 133 and a JD FitzPatrick (Kensington, MD) 13-5 major at 141. 

Nash got WPI into the win column in a big way, as he pinned the nation's 10th-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds at 2:28 of the first period.  Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), the No. 4 ranked wrestler, helped the Engineers get back to within 11-9 by tallying a defensive-minded 3-1 decision. 

Nick Remke (Marengo, IL), ranked seventh at 165 pounds, helped the Bears take back control of the match with a 7-0 shutout and Nick Moreno (Reisterstown, MD) pushed the lead to 20-9 with a pin at 2:13 of his match at 174.

In arguably the marquee match of the night between two nationally ranked opponents, WPI's Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA), the sixth ranked 184-pounder defeated the seventh ranked 174-pounder 3-2 in TB2 in a match at 184 pounds. 

The Bears closed out the match with a pair of victories.  Paul Detwiler (Fleming Island, FL), ranked eighth at 184 pounds bumped up a weight class and posted 5-1 victory at 197 and Patrick Irwin (El Dorado Hills, CA) pinned his opponent at heavyweight in the first period.

WPI returns home Saturday for its first home contest of 2019.  The Engineers host a quad meet with Trinity, Roger Williams and RIT beginning at 11am in the Sports & Recreation Center.  Coast Guard hosts a super quad of its own on Sunday, welcoming Johnson & Wales, Norwich and Southern Maine to New London for a noon meet.
