New London, Conn.-- Coast Guard wrestling won both of their matches on Sunday afternoon in a meet against Norwich and Southern Maine. The Bears swept Norwich, 46-0 and defeated Southern Maine 29-12.
Kenji Beato kicked off the day for Coast Guard in the 133 weight class when he beat Jacob Forsman in a fall 6:41. Christian Gosch defeated Zach Morris in a fall 1:36 in the 157 weight class to give the Bears six more points. Jonathan Wagner defeated Satchel Stauffer in a decision 8-4 for the 197 weight class for three more points. George McBurney closed out the match with Norwich by defeating Gabriel Duden in a decision 7-1 in the 285 weight class.
Southern Maine took an early 12-0 lead, winning the first three matches of their contest. The Bears fired back, winning the next seven events of the day to take the 29-12 lead over Southern Maine. Matthew McGowan earned the first three points for the Bears in a decision 3-0 over Brendan Weir in the 149. Gosch won his second of the day by defeating Zach Thompson in a decision 6-1 in the 157 to give the Bears three more points. Nick Remke, who is ranked #7 in the country for 165, defeated Juan Vernaza in a fall 2:35 to give the Bears six more points, tying it up 12-12.
AJ Aeberli, ranked #7 in the country for 174, defeated Josh Smith in a major decision 11-3. Paul Detwiler, also ranked at #7 in the 184 weight class, beat Raul Gierbolini for four points in a major decision 10-1.
Jonathan Wagner defeated Dylan Schenk in the 197 with a fall 0:23 for six more points for the Bears. George McBurney finished it off for Coast Guard as he took a victory over Jake Peavy in a decision (13-6) in 285 to give the Bears the 29-12 final.
Coast Guard will travel to Rhode Island College on January 16 for a 7:00 PM dual.
