Bears Place 2nd at NE Dual Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  Coast Guard, ranked  23rd nationally, placed second at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships. The Bears had their seven match winning streak snapped in the championship match.

Freshman Paul Detwiler, who is ranked #7 in the nation, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler as he won all three matches and he earned a spot on the All-tournament team. Detwiler defeated John Boyle of Western New England, who is ranked #2 in the nation. He then went on to beat Khamri Thomas of Johnson and Wales, who is ranked #3 in the nation. 

Top-seeded and host Johnson & Wales, ranked 2nd nationally, beat the second-seeded Bears 31-9 in the championship match. Coast Guard was fourth last season and third in 2017.

Coast Guard, which is now 7-2 in dual matches this season, beat Western New England 29-10 in the quarterfinals and third-seeded, nationally ranked at #18 Roger Williams 25-13 in the semifinals.

The Bears opened the tournament with a 29-10 win over Western New England winning seven of the 10 matches.

Coast Guard trailing 10-9 after five matches, would win the final five en route to the win.

Kenji Beato (133) and Patrick Irwin (Hwt) each registered pins in 4:37 and 3:06 respectively in the win over the Golden Bears.

Matt McGowan (9-0 at 149) and #7 nationally ranked, Nick Remke (11-3 at 165) registered major decisions while AJ Aeberli also nationally ranked #7 (4-3 at 174), Detwiler (3-1 SV at 184) and Jon Wagner (5-2 at 197) all won by decision for the Bears in the quarterfinal win.

In the semifinals, Jon Wagner pinned his opponent 3:37 into the 197-pound match as the Bears clinched the win over third-seeded nationally ranked, #18 Roger Williams. Coast Guard won 25-13 to earn a spot in the championship match

The Bears trailed 10-3 after four matches with Beato (133) winning 7-3 for the only points early.

Christian Gosch (157) earned a major decision 9-1 before Nick Remke (165) lost 7-5 at 165 and the Hawks maintainted a 13-7 lead with four matches left

Aeberli (174) and Detwiler (187) each earned major decisions as the Bears took the lead for good 15-13 before the Wagner pin clinched the match and Irwin closed it out with an 11-1 major decision.

In the championship match, Remke won 5-4 at 165 pounds, Aeberli registered and 8-6 overtime win at 174 pounds and Detwiler followed with a 3-1 ovetime win at 187 for the Bears.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday at the All-Academy Championships at Norwich University.
