NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Coast Guard was the top Division III finisher and placed sixth overall at the All-Academy Championships at Norwich University.
Nick Remke (165) and Paul Detwiler (184) were the top Coast Guard finishers as each placed fourth to lead the Bears.
Remke was beaten by Owen Brown from Army 6-2 in the third place match. He placed fourth for the third straight season. Detwiler lost to Chris Morgan from Army 9-6 in the third place match to also place fourth.
The Bears had 14.5 points to easily beat Merchant Marine (2.5 points) and host Norwich (1 point) for the DIII team title. Navy won the championship with 115.5 points.
Three Coast Guard wrestlers reached the semifinal round as Matt McGowan (149) beat Tyler Baker from Norwich 11-1 in the first round before falling to Jared Prince of Navy in the semifinals by tech fall.
AJ Aeberli (174) blanked Max Sims from Merchant Marine 9-0 before losing to Spencer Carey from Navy in the semifinal round.
Detwiler (184) received a bye into the semifinals where he was beaten by Jacob Thompson of Air Force 7-6.
In the consolation first round, Parker Brunkala (125) pinned Dylan Marone in 4:54, Remke (165) blanked Luke Sicksic from VMI 6-0 and Patrick Irwin (Hwt.) won a 14-4 major decision over John Rohrig from Norwich.
In the consolation semifinals, Remke beat Jacoby Ward from Air Force 8-5 while Detwiler beat Martin Duane from the Citadel 12-1 as each earned spots in the third place match.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday at the Wildcat Open at Johnson and Wales.
