NEW LONDON, Conn.--Junior Jill Kelly scored a goal and assisted on two others as Coast Guard picked up its first win of the season with a 4-0 win across town beating Mitchell in a non-conference game.
The Bears, who had been shutout in the first three games this season, improve to 1-3 on the year while Mitchell drops to 0-2.
Freshman Hanna Jansson gave the Bears all they would need with a goal in the 7th minute with Kelly assisting.
Kelly scored late in the first half, in the 41st minute with freshman Sarah Hills getting the assist for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Sheila Dutt scored just over a minute later with Kelly again assisting pushing the lead to 3-0 just before the half.
Sophomore Holly Moore closed the scoring in the 53rd minute with freshman Liz Runci adding the assist.
Junior Devin Fellman did not need to make a save to record her first collegiate win and shutout as the Bears outshot Mitchell 23-1.
"I am happy to get the win this afternoon," said Coast Guard head coach Susan Grant. "We had a lot of nice combinations leading to offensive chances for us and our play improved throughout the course of the match. Our defense was solid and I am proud of Devin for getting her first shutout."
Coast Guard will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when the Bears host Wellesley at 2:30 p.m.
