ST MARY'S CITY, Md.-The Coast Guard women's soccer team struck first in final of the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's College but were unable to hold on to the lead and had to settle for second place following a 3-2 defeat. Senior Judy Hooymans, sophomore Madison Ahlers, and freshman Terry Netusil were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
Junior Lindsay Duplessis got the Bears (1-1-0) on the board in the 21st minute when she was able to beat St. Mary's (1-0-1) senior Kelsey Wirtz for her first goal of the season. After taking a pass in the box from Netusil, she hit a shot into the top left corner of the net. Coast Guard was able to make the lead stand until halftime as they were able to mount a 5-3 advantage in shots before the first period came to a close.
The game was a physical one, with 27 total fouls called (14 against Coast Guard, 13 against St. Mary's). That tally included a yellow card issued to Coast Guard sophomore Taylor Peace in the 44th minute.
St. Mary's wasted little time evening things up coming out of the break as sophomore Jess Konecke buried a shot into the lower right corner from 25 yards out in the 50th minute.
In the 58th minute sophomore Gillian Sawyer scored the first of her two goals on the day after taking a long volley pass from senior Yvonne Latour, dribbling in, and beating Coast Guard senior keeper Devin Fellman over the top. She would add her second goal in the 62nd minute after pushing a diving shot into the far left passed Fellman.
In the 85th minute, with time winding down, sophomore Sarah Hills notched her first goal of the season when she took a cross from Ahlers at the top of the box and beat Wirtz to the top right corner of the net.
The rally fell just short, however, despite Coast Guard controlling the game statistically; they held a 19-8 advantage in shots, and a 5-2 margin on corner kicks.
Coast Guard will return to action on Wednesday, September 4th when they travel to Lasell for a 4:00 pm contest. They open up the home portion of their schedule next Sunday, September 8th against UMass Dartmouth at 2:30 pm.
