NEW LONDON, Conn.-The Coast Guard women's soccer team fell 2-1 against Springfield in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the Coast Guard Track Complex. With the victory, Springfield improves to 4-2-0 (1-0-0 NEWMAC) on the season while Coast Guard falls to 3-5-0 (0-1-0 NEWMAC).
Springfield got on the board first when sophomore Mariah Ferrara was able to beat junior keeper Holly Moore after taking a pass from senior Ashley Carresi on the wing just under two minutes into the match.
Coast Guard, battling throughout, knotted the game at 1-all in the 24th minute when junior Julia Mundy's shot from distance made it past Springfield freshman goalkeeper Sarah Myers.
Following the half-time break, the Pride came out firing once again, as senior Brittany Samson took a cross from fellow senior Karly Barrett and put it into the net, off the bottom of the crossbar for the 2-1 lead.
Springfield held the edge in most every category for the match but that didn't tell the whole story, as the Bears played them tough. In the end the Pride outshot Coast Guard 19-8 but the Bears held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Moore made eight saves for the Bears while Myers (2) and junior Lucy Gillett (3) combined for five for Springfield.
While the end result wasn't exactly what the Bears had hoped for, they will be able to claim one milestone from the match as the goal scored by Mundy was the first Coast Guard has scored since 2008 against Springfield and just the seventh all-time.
Coast Guard will return to action on Wednesday, September 25th when the travel to take on Conn. College at 4:00 pm. They will return home on Friday, September 27th when they host Clark at 7:00 pm as part of Parent's Weekend.
