Second half offensive outburst carries Bears to Home Opener Victory
Runci started the scoring in the first half when she took a pass over the top of the defense from senior Lindsay Duplessis that left her one on one with the goalie. She slipped the ball past Mitchell goalkeeper Shirley Palmer for her first goal of the season.
Coast Guard's offense went quiet for the rest of the first half but picked it up quickly at the start of the second half with a goal by sophomore Alyssa Sato assisted by Liz Runci in the 55th minute. This was Sato's first goal and Runci's first assist of the season.
This goal opened it up for the Bears as Junior Sarah Hills scored an unassisted goal in 56th minute, followed by two goals by Caroline Eastman. Eastman goals were assisted by Freshman Elley Donnelly and again by Duplessis. Freshman Gabrielle Auzenbergs finished off the scoring with a goal in the 90th minutes assisted by Sarah Hills.
Coast Guard's defense has been stout this season as they have held their first two opponents to zero goals and only seven shots. Senior goalie Holly Moore made one save to record her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.
Shirley Palmer made eight saves in goal for the Mariners.
Coast Guard improves to 2-0 and Mitchell drops to 0-1 on the season.
The Bears are back in action this weekend at the Mary Washington Classic in Fredericksburg Virginia where they will face Mary Washington on Saturday and Shenandoah on Sunday. Both will be played at 12:30 pm.
