NEW LONDON, Conn. – Wellesley scored two first half goals as they topped Coast Guard 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Friday night.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Blue improve to 3-5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Melise Knowles had a goal and an assist for Wellesley while sophomore Carley Phillips scored her team leading fifth goal of the season.
Knowles got the Blue on the board early as she received a pass at the left side of the penalty box, beat her defender and rifled a shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
Senior Michelle Hernandez had the best attempt for Coast Guard in the 12th minute as she ripped a shot from twenty yards out forcing a diving save from sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Reckley.
In the 21st minute the Bears had another opportunity to get on the board as sophomore Claire Hurley sent a corner kick in from the left side. The cross got over the hands of Reckley and bounced in the center of the penalty box. Sophomore Lydia VanWinkle met the bounce with a header and put it on goal, but the Blue defense cleared it off the line and out of danger.
Knowles set up the second and final goal of the game for Wellesley right before the end of the half as she slipped past the Bears defense and charged in on goal. Knowles attempted the shot but junior goalkeeper Rachel Boohar made a sprawling save. The rebound however spilled to Phillips who one touched it into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Blue managed to hold the Coast Guard's offense at bay in the second half and made their 2-0 lead stand for their second NEWMAC win of the season.
Boohar (4-5) made eight saves on ten shots on goal allowing the two goals. Boohar is fifth in the conference with 48 saves on the season.
Reckley (3-5-2) six saves on six shots on goal for her third shutout of the season.
The Bears are back in action on October 3rd, when they travel to South Hadley, Massachusetts for a NEWMAC game against Mount Holyoke. Opening kickoff is 6:00.
