NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Claire Hurley scored two second half goals leading Coast Guard to a 2-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action Thursday night.
With the win, the Bears improve to 7-6 on the season while the Corsairs fall to 4-10-1 overall.
Hurley scored her third and fourth of the season on unassisted goals moving her season points total to 10 which is first on the team.
After a scoreless first half Coast Guard pressed for the leading goal in the second period. Senior Gabrielle Auzenbergs nearly tallied it in the 63rd minute as she found space out front of the UMass Dartmouth penalty box. Auzenbergs held off her defender and slid a shot past junior goalkeeper Korina Miguel. The shot hit off the post and ran across the front of the goal but no Coast Guard player could get a touch on the rebound and the ball was cleared away.
Hurley scored her first of two foal just over ten minutes later as she settled a bouncing ball on the right side of the Corsairs penalty box. She hit a half volley that curled just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead with 74:31 on the clock.
In the 82nd minute Hurley stepped up to take a free kick from 35 yards out. She hit a shot towards the left side of the goal and buried it in the upper corner for the final goal of the game and 2-0 victory.
Junior Rachel Boohar (7-6) wrapped up the teams seventh shutout of the season making two saves on two shots on goal. She is second in the NEWMAC with five shutouts on the season.
Miguel (4-10-1) made four saves on six shots on goal allowing two goals.
