NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard women's soccer team dropped their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) of the season as Springfield scored three second half goals to win 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 3-2-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in the conference. The Pride improve to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Amanda Wright, junior Mackenzie Luiz and freshman Alyana Sosa each scored a goal for Springfield. Sophomore Sara Swetland and junior Sydney Wine both had an assist.

Coast Guard nearly took the lead late in the first half as freshman Brielle Pearce dribbled through the Springfield defense to the top of the Pride's penalty box. Pearce stopped just short of the top of the box and passed the ball back to junior Madeleine Khoilian who rifled a shot off the cross bar and down into the goal. The ref however whistled a late foul and the goal was negated leaving the halftime score 0-0.

Springfield wasted little time in the second half finding their first goal of the game as the Bears were unable to clear a bouncing ball out of their penalty box. Swetland settled the ball on the right side of the box and played it back across the front of the goal. Wright met the cross and fired it home for the 1-0 lead with 46:26 on the clock.

In the 60thminute, the Pride scored their second goal as Luiz picked off a goal kick on the right side of the field. Luiz dribbled the ball back into the attacking third and fired a shot into the opposite corner of the goal for her first tally of the season.

Springfield found their third goal of the game in the 61stminute as Wine sent a corner kick into the box from the left side. Sosa met the ball in a mess of players and headed it home for the Pride's final goal of the game making the score 3-0.

Freshman Katharina Commins (3-2-0) made a season high seven saves in her first NEWMAC game of her career.

Senior Izzy Inglese (1-0-0) earned her first shutout of the season, making three saves in her first start of the season.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, September 18th, when they host Conn. College at 4:30 in nonconference action.
