Bears Rally Falls Short Against Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. -  Coast Guard could not overcome a two goal, second half deficit as they fell to Conn. College 2-1 in the battle for the Whale Cup Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 3-3 on the season while the Camels improve to 4-1.

Junior Lizzie Miller scored her second career goal in the second half while sophomore Kylee Ballard tallied her fifth point of the season with an assist.

Sophomore Kat Norton led the way for Conn. College with the game winning goal and an assist. Senior Sam Miesemer scored her first goal of the season for the Camels while senior Alex Baltazar had the other assist.

After a slow first half, the score looked to be knotted heading into intermission before Shania Breiman fired a shot on goal. Freshman Katharina Commins made the initial save but could not hold the rebound. The ball bounced around the box before Norton poked the ball to Miesemer who finished into the open net giving Conn. College the 1-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the opening stanza.

The Bears came out strong in the second half as senior Kali Borden got free on the right side and found freshman Brielle Pearce in the box. Pearce attempted a quick shot but senior Emmy McGoldrick quickly slid over and blocked the shot ending the attack.

The Camels found their second goal of the game in the 62ndminute as Baltazar sprung Norton down the right side for a break away. Norton touched the ball towards goal and rifled a shot into the opposite corner for the 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard continued to press and were able to cut into the Camels lead in the 82ndminute. Ballard stepped up and drove a corner kick into the box from the right side. Miller met the service and headed it home making the score 2-1. The Bears however, could not find the equalizer in the final eight minutes of the game giving Conn. College their eighth straight victory in the local rivalry.

Commins (3-3) made six saves on eight shots on goal allowing a tally in each half.

Junior Sarah Williams started in goal for the Camels making one save in the first half. Sophomore Katy Pelletier (2-1) received the brunt of the work in the second half, making three saves on four shots on goal, allowing the one score in the win.

Coast Guard is back in action this Saturday, September 22nd, when they host WPI in NEWMAC action. Opening kickoff is 11:30.
