NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Claire Hurley scored a pair of second half goals as Coast Guard shutout Clark 2-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game and secured a berth in the conference tournament for the first time since 2014.
The Bears, playing their final regular season home game of the season, wore pink warm up shirts and pink socks to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
Coast Guard improves to 8-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the NEWMAC while the Cougars are now also 8-6-1 overall and drop to 3-5 in conference play. The five NEWMAC wins for the Bears the most conference wins in a season. The team won four conference games in a season three times including last season.
Hurley hit the post 3:59 into match, the best opportunity for either team in the first half as the game remained scoreless at the break.
It was just 3:37 into the second half when Coast Guard was awarded a penalty kick and Hurley missed the kick, but scored off the rebound to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. It was her 20th career goal becoming the fourth Coast Guard player to reach that milestone.
The Cougars had their best chance to pull even in the 62nd minute, but freshman Mia Advocate's shot was wide of the open net.
Hurley would give the Bears an insurance goal in the 63rd minute when she took a pass from sophomore Felicia Lombardi and scored her team-high ninth goal of the season.
Freshman Katharina Commins (8-6-1) made four saves to record her fourth shutout of the season for the Bears.
Junior Julianna Christy (2-5) made nine saves in goal for Clark, which was outshot 16-8.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday at Albertus Magnus in the final non-conference game of the season at 6:00.
