SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- The Coast Guard women's swimming and diving team won a pair of events at the 2013 edition of the Union Relays on Saturday. While winning two events, the Bears placed third in the four others en route to a third place finish.
Union won the overall team title with 116 points, narrowly edging out second place SUNY-New Paltz (108), while the Bears placed third with 78 points.
Junior Sara Cantrell won the 3 meter diving relay with a total of 426.44 points while the three-swimmer team in 600 Medley 200 IM of junior Darlene Sao, freshman Kaitlyn Toth, and senior Chantel Ferguson won their event in a time of 6:57.38 as well.
Sao was also a member of a trio of relay teams which placed third in their respective events while Ferguson and Toth were each on a pair of third place finishing teams.
Coast Guard earned third place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay, 300 Breaststroke Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay.
The 400 Medley Relay team of Sao, Toth, Ferguson, and freshman Carlie Gilligan placed third with a time of 4:17.15 in the event. In the 300 Breaststroke Relay, a team of Gilligan, Toth, and junior Kelsey Gray finished their race in a time of 3:41.78.
The team of Sao, Gray, and sophomores Carly Campbell and Patti Eidenire finished with a time of 1:44.82 in the 200 Freestyle Relay. The final podium finish belonged to the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Ferguson, Eidenire, Gray, and Sao who finished their race in 3:51.42.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, November 2nd when they travel to Springfield to take on Rhode Island and Springfield.
