SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Coast Guard women's track & field team took fourth place at the Springfield Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Bears were led by freshman Emma Sims on the track who took first place in the 5K with the eighth fastest time in program history, 19:00.99. Senior Rachel Burchill was right behind Sims in second place (19:24.05).
Wrapping up the top 10 finishes on the track was Hollis Roush in the 100 hurdles, who ran 16.82 for fifth place tying her personal best, which is the eighth fastest time in program history. Sophomore Mary Sims was eighth in the same event (17.18).
In the field events, senior Gabbie Troise and freshman Leilani Salang cleaned up with three top 10 finishes each. Troise was first in the Hammer (158-09), third in the discus (120-05) and fourth in the shot (37-06) while Selang was first in the discus (134-03) which ties her for third all-time in program history, fifth in the shot (36-01.25) and fifth in the hammer (134-03). Junior Karen Hovey also earned two top- finishes taking seventh in the hammer (125-01) and 10th in the discus (93-05).
Roush also earned a top-10 finish in the high jump, tying for third clearing 5-00.50. Her jump is the third highest jump in program history. Also competing in the jumps was junior Kristina Bynum (17-00, 4th) and sophomore Nyjah Turner (12-11.25, 10th) in the long jump.
Coast Guard is back in action next Saturday, April 28th, at NEWMAC Championship hosted by MIT.
