NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore All-American Kaitlyn Mooney has been named the 2019 NCAA Division III New England Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
She becomes the first Coast Guard track athlete to earn the USTFCCA New England Track Athlete of the Year honors since Mike Flint won the honor in 2007. She is the first Coast Guard female to win the award.
Mooney is undefeated and the DIII leader in both the 3000 and 5000 meters. In the 5000, her best time of 16:27.30 is No. 2 in Division III history and her 9:27.25 in the 3000 meters ranks No. 3 all-time in DIII.
She was tabbed USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week three times this season, and will run in both the 5,000 meters the DMR in at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday in Boston.
Mooney placed fifth in the 3,000 meters to earn All-America honors last season during the indoor season, but will concentrate on the 5,000 meters and DMR and not run the 3,000 meters this weekend.
