Ray is in his 14th season as a member of theBears coaching staff.
In track, LaForte works primarly with the hurdlers. In his 14seasons, the hurdlers on both the men's and women's temams have setschool record in very hurdling event.
Last season, Adam Scalesse earned All-America status in the 60meter high hurdles during the indoor season and was an All-Americanin the 100 high hurdles in the outdoor season. Kyle Coleman was theNEWMAC champion in the 400 hurdles in 2008, 2009 and 2010 whileScalesse was the NEWMAC champion in that event in 2011.
On the women's side, LaForte has coached school record holder SaraMeserve (55 high hurdles) as well as NEWMAC champions Chanel Lee(100 high hurdles/2008) and Alaina Kiskadoon (400 hurdles/2010)
The Bears offense has thrived under LaForte as the Bears wonback-to-back New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan DivisionChampionships in 2006 and 2007 while setting a school-record with14 straight conference wins.
Under LaForte, the Bears have tied or set 28 school offensiverecords since 2006 with the fast paced, no huddle style offensiveapproach. He converted Christian George from a wide receiver to aquarterback and George was named the NEFC Bogan Division OffensivePlayer of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. He also coached threeAll-Division quarterbacks in the last four years and coached a pairof record setting wide receivers in Sam England and (most careerreceptions) and Eric Gerken (most receptions in asingle-season).
This past season, the Bears set a school-record with 3,661 yardsof total offense, 2,694 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes andthe team was second in the nation with just two fumbles lost. In2007, the Bears set a NEFC record with 684 yards of total offensein a singlegame.
Ray has a history of mentoring quarterbacks as he worked with JeffBlake in 1991 at East Carolina the same season Blake finishedseventh in the Heisman Trophy voting as the Pirates finished theseason ninth in the final AP poll.
At Coast Guard, he coached a pair of quarterbacks, Niles Pierson(2006) and John Resch (2009) who won the prestigious Gold Helmetfrom the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
LaForte a 25-year coaching veteran, spent five seasons as theDefensive Coordinator at Ithaca, sharing an office with currentCoast Guard head coach Bill George.
While at Ithaca, LaForte coached four first team All-Americaselections and the Bombers made a trip to the 1994 NCAA Semifinalsand won two ECAC Championships (1996, 1998). In 1998, his puntreturn team led the NCAA in yards per return.
LaForte was also an assistant lacrosse coach at Ithaca for fiveseasons.
Prior to coaching at Ithaca, LaForte was a graduate assistant atEast Carolina from 1991-1993.
Ray, his wife Michelle and children Michael (13), Mason (11) andMadison (6) reside in Quaker Hill.
