#25 Bears Win NEWMAC Opener
NORTON, MASS.--(9/13/11)-- Sophomore Kelsey DePorto led the defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament champion Bears with nine kills as #25 Coast Guard beat Wheaton 3-0 in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.
Coast Guard, which earned the #25 ranking in the weekly American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll earlier in the day, won by set scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 to improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Wheaton drops to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Junior Catherine Walker and freshman Kelsey Hickle each recorded seven kills for the victorious Bears.
The Bears won game one, 25-18, behind three kills each from DePorto and Hickey.
In the second game, DePorto put down four kills and junior Keriann Mason recorded three as the Bears posted a .429 hitting percentage en route to a 25-14 win.
Walker recorded four of her seven kills along with a pair of service aces in Coast Guard's 25-14 win in game three. Senior Emily Davison had six of her 12 digs in the third set for Wheaton.
Junior Katie Matic dished out 28 assists for Coast Guard while Mason tallied nine digs and DePorto recorded three blocks (one solo).
Junior Olanna Nissim finished with 12 assists for the Lyons while Cannon posted nine digs.
