Bears Split at Haverford Tournament

HAVERFORD, PA.--(9/3/11)--Coast Guard split a pair of matches on the first day of the Haverford Invitational.

Coast Guard best host Haverford 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 7-25, 15-8) in the first match of the day before losing to Bethany of West Virginia 3-1.

In the opening match of the day, a 3-2 win over host Haverford, the host Fords scored the final two points to win the first set 25-23.

In the second set, Coast Guard scored six straight points, four them served by freshman Elise Sako turning a 15-12 deficit into an 18-15 lead enroute to a 25-20 win.

The Bears jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the third set and posted a 25-16 before the Fords tied the match with a 25-7 win in the fourth set.

Coast Guard scored six of the first seven points in the fifth and final set with Sako again serving four straight points and the Bears went on to win the set 15-8 to clinch the victory.

Junior Keriann Mason led the way with 19 kills to go with 11 digs while classmate Catherine Walker had eight kills, ten digs and three blocks. Junior Karen Matic led the way with 38 assists while sophomore Sam Marmolejo had a team-high 19 digs.

Sophomore Kelsey DePorto had a team-high six blocks and three aces to go with her ten kills while freshman Kelsey Hickle added nine kills and five digs in the win.

Bethany of West Virginia, which won the ECAC South Championship last season, won the first two sets and beat the Bears 3-1.

Mason led the way with 14 kills, Hickle added ten kills and DePorto finished with eight kills in the loss. Matic had 37 assists to go with nine digs while Marmolejo had a season-high 20 digs for the Bears (2-1).
