WALTHAM, Mass.-The Coast Guard women's volleyball team won a pair of games Friday evening at the Brandeis Volleyball Invitational. The victories over Rhode Island College and Emmanuel moved the Bears to 3-2 on the young season.
In the opening match of the night, Coast Guard won a 3-0, straight set sweep over Rhode Island College. The game scores were 25-13, 25-14, and 25-17. Senior Kelsey DePorto led the way for the Bears with 17 kills against just two errors, hitting at a .535 clip. Sophomore Maggie Hine played a large role in the attack as well, contributing 31 assists. Defensively, senior Samantha Marmolejo and freshman Susan West recorded eight digs apiece.
In the nightcap, the Bears defeated Emmanuel, also in straight sets, 25-15, 25-20 and 25-9. DePorto once again led the way with eight kills in the night cap with West and freshman Rebekah Muller tallying seven kills each. Once again Hine led the team in helpers with 25 assists.
Coach Aylene Ilkson was very pleased with the club's performance, saying, "it was amazing to see the team come together the way they did today. Not only for one match, but back-to-back matches. Our hard work is producing results."
Coast Guard returns to action for day two of the Brandeis Volleyball Invitational tomorrow when they take on Trinity (Conn.) at 2:00 pm at the Auerbach Arena. They'll wrap up competition at the tournament with a 4:00 pm match-up with Brandeis, also at Auerbach Arena.
