WALTHAM, Mass.-The Coast Guard women's volleyball team concluded a perfect weekend at the Brandeis Volleyball Invitational with a pair of victories this afternoon against Trinity (Conn.) and Brandeis, 3-2 and 3-0, respectively. After a 4-0 weekend, Coast Guard moves to 5-2 on the season; Trinity and Brandeis drop to 2-1 and 3-4, respectively.
Senior Kelsey DePorto, with 33 kills on the day, surpassed the 1,000th of her career against Brandeis in the second match of the day. She becomes just the 10th player in Coast Guard volleyball history to amass as many 1,000 for their career.
After recording 56 kills in the Bears' four matches, DePorto was named to the All-Tournament Team. A three-time All-NEWMAC selection, DePorto now has 1,013 kills in her four-year career.
Game 1: COAST GUARD 3, Trinity (Conn.) 2
The Bears opened the day with a 3-2 victory in a five-set thriller against Trinity. The Bears dropped the first set 20-25 before rallying 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, and 15-13 for the victory.
Senior Samantha Marmolejo recorded 20 digs to lead the club defensively in the opener. DePorto led the way with 17 kills, hitting at a .388 rate while sophomore Maggie Hine contributed 33 assists in the winning effort.
The victory over Trinity was the 14th in a row for Coast Guard dating back to the 2000 season.
Game 2: COAST GUARD 3, Brandeis 0
After a narrow victory in the opener, Coast Guard was able to get by Brandeis a little easier in the finale with a 3-0 straight set victory. The game scores were 25-22, 25-16, and 25-16.
DePorto led the attack in the matchup with Brandeis with 16 kills, attacking at a .469 clip. She was joined on the attack by sophomores Kelsey Hickle and Ashley Dumont who added seven and five kills, respectively.
Hine again led the way with 26 assists and was one of four Bears with at least six digs. Marmolejo paced Coast Guard with 13 digs while freshmen Susan West and Rebekah Muller tallied nine and six, respectively.
Coast Guard played exceptionally well against Brandeis, attacking at .269 as a team, compared to just a .029 rate by the Judges. The committed just 10 attack errors while Brandeis finished with 25 for the match.
With the victory, Coast Guard has now defeated Brandeis three times in a row since 2010.
Coast Guard head coach Aylene Ilkson was very pleased with her team's performance over the weekend, saying, "Today we were able to close out a very competitive, high intensity match against Trinity." She continued by saying that she "was very proud to see the team stick together through adversity and the challenge that faced them across the net. Then, to beat Brandeis in a dominant fashion was the icing on the cake. I'm very proud of my team this weekend."

Coast Guard will return to action on Saturday, September 14th when they travel to take on archrival Merchant Marine at 12:00 pm. The Bears return home on Tuesday, September 24th when they host Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match-up at 7:00 pm.
