KINGS POINT, N.Y.-Senior Kelsey DePorto registered a match-high 14 kills with a .400 attack percentage and the Coast Guard volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win over archrival Merchant Marine on Saturday. With the 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 victory the Bears improve to 6-2 on the season while the Mariners fall to 6-1.
Freshman Susan West also figured heavily into the attack, recording seven kills while hitting at a .333 clip. Sophomore Maggie Hine led the Bears with an .800 hitting average on five attempts. For the match, Coast Guard attacked at a .317 rate compared to just -.121 for Merchant Marine.
Hine led the team in assists again with a match-high 20 while DePorto and junior Elise Sako each recorded assists. Senior Samantha Marmalejo led eight players who tallied digs for the Bears with six, while sophomore Kelsey Hickle and Hine added five and four, respectively.
Coast Guard also recorded six blocks and six serves aces in the match that took just an hour and three minutes to complete.
Merchant Marine only attacked at a positive rate in the first set when they hit at a .150 clip before attacking in the negatives in both the second (-.235) and third (-.241). Coast Guard, meanwhile, didn't attack below .240 in any set posting marks of .389 (set 1), .353 (set 2), and .240 (set 3).
The match was exactly what head coach Aylene Ilkson hoped it would be, saying, "It was a true team effort today. We are so thankful for the fan base that was at the match. It kept our momentum up throughout the entirety of the match, and created and intense yet fun atmosphere for the team."
Coast Guard returns to action on Tuesday, September 17th when they open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play at Springfield at 7:00 pm. Their next home match will be Tuesday, September 24th when they host Smith at 7:00 pm.
