Bears Win Sixth Straight
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sophomore Ashley Dumont and senior Kelsey DePorto each had nine kills while freshman Michaela McKeown had a career-high 24 digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Worcester State on the opening night of the 2013 Bear Classic.
Coast Guard, which ran its win streak to six, won by game scores of 25-8, 25-13, 25-23 to improve to 16-5 on the season while Worcester State dropped to 5-12 overall.
The Bears jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening game and closed out the opener by scoring 15 of the final 17 points for the 25-8 win.
In game two, the Bears once again led 10-3. The Lancers closed to within 15-10 before Coast Guard scored ten of the final 13 for a 25-13 win.
Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-23 win. Worcester State led by as many as six, at 12-6 before the Bears scored eight of the next ten to tie the game 14-14. The Lancers led 20-19 before three straight gave the Bears a 22-20 lead. The game was tied at 23-23 before Dumont and freshman Rebekah Muller registered back-to-back kills to end the match.
Muller finished with 20 digs while sophomore Maggie Hine led the way with a match-high 33 assists.
Senior Samantha Marmolejo, who is second all-time at the Academy in digs, registered her 1,600th career dig (finishing the night with 1,601) and she is now 49 shy of becoming the Bears all-leader as she chases the mark of 1,649 set by Jessica Anderson (2007-'10).
"It was a solid performance for us tonight," said Coast Guard head coach Aylene Ilkson. "Maggie Hine did an excellent job directing the offense. We look forward to a pair of competitive matches tomorrow."
In the first match of the night, junior Sara Pendleton had a match-high 19 kills leading Ramapo to its fifth straight win, a 3-1 victory over Bridgewater State.
Ramapo dropped the first game 25-23 before winning three straight 25-21, 25-13, 25-23 to improve to 11-8 on the season.
Freshman Rachel Selmore added 12 kills and a team-high 14 digs for the Roadrunners while sophomore Emily Harris added 12 digs in the win. Sophomore Kaitlin Mac Iver led the way with a match-high 39 assists.
Freshman Hannah Haymon led Bridgewater State (11-11) with 12 kills to go with eight digs while senior Danielle Dean led the Bears with a match-high 15 digs. Freshman Charleyne Panner led Bridgewater with 23 assists in the loss.
There will be four games on Saturday in the 2013 Bear Classic beginning at 9 a.m. when Worcester State takes on Ramapo.
Coast Guard will play at 11 a.m. against Ramapo and 4 p.m. against Bridgewater State on Saturday.
